There is small error in regexp above. Character '-' in regexp ranges
have to be last one before closing ']'.

(?i)^(?>(?(1)\.|())[^\W_](?>[a-z0-9/_-]*[^\W_])?)+$

But "helo_allow_chars = _" in main section of exim.conf is much simpler
solution (as someone else said already).
