The version of clamd he's running has some known bugs WRT signature
processing - it takes ages to load the signature (sometimes more than 15
minutes on even good hardware), and it won't create the socket until it
has loaded the signatures.
This has gotten to be sort of a FAQ on the clamav-users list, which is
why I pointed the OP there.
