There is another thing to consider aside from what Phil mentioned, which
are time triggered non-delivery notifications. You know, like the ones a
default exim config will generate after it has been unable to hand off a
mail for more than 4 hours. If any of the systems you are deferring
implement such a thing, there will be plenty of fallout.
