I believe it's just a matter of what method of login support they included
in to their product. The LOGIN method isn't officially documented (as in,
no RFC's exist for it) apparently, so of course Microsoft would choose to
implement that instead. There's no real pitfall to using one or the other -
both send passwords in the clear.
