Sounds like it. I wonder if you'd be better off using an NSS module to do
the SQL lookups? Then you wouldn't have to hack Exim.

originator_login is the username of the user that invoked Exim, and
originator_name is the GECOS field. See exim.c line 4030 onwards.

Perhaps because you start it as root, but when you HUP it Exim is running
as courier and re-execs itself with that userid.

You don't need to HUP Exim when you rotate the logs because Exim's logging
code detects log rotation and re-opens them automatically.
