Those error messages look weird and incomplete. Did you chop them when
cutting and pasting? In particular, what is the complete line that
starts "cd"?

PCRE 7.7 builds perfectly on many releases of Linux, so I suspect
something may be wrong with your system, or perhaps your copy of PCRE
7.7 is corrupted. I don't understand why it tries to refer to
Makefile.am when compiling.
