check out the following test (same regex and data. the only change is the
unicode flag):

$ pcretest
PCRE version 7.7 2008-05-07

re> /^[^d]*?$/
data> abc
0: abc

$ pcretest
PCRE version 7.7 2008-05-07

re> /^[^d]*?$/8
data> abc
No match
