I fail to see why that would be a desirable behaviour.

Maybe you should see a "try" as working through all the possible
MX targets up to the point where a target either accepts or rejects
the message [simplified]. A "try" will also always start at the
most preferred (ie lowest MX) available target and work through
the list in order - so the next "try" would not start at a middle
MX (unless the most preferred targets had host retry records preventing
that).

If you have suggestions for documentation rewording to make this clear
then feel free to submit them as a bug report.
