Thanks, that was the key to the solution. While stripping down the
config, I noticed that there was no primary_hostname option set in the
configuration despite the metaconfig option being there.

Our script does not set primary_hostname if hostname --fqdn does
return a value without dots.

Issue solved, thanks for helping, and sorry for the confusion.
