I've been using dovecot for a while now with no problems.

I use spamassassin + dspam to filter email. Spam is tagged by dspam in
the headers. I then use the following simple .forward file:

# Exim filter

if $h_X-DSPAM-Result: is "Spam" then save mail/Junk
elif $h_from: contains "root@???" then save mail/system
elif $h_from: contains "logcheck@???" then save mail/system
elif not personal then save mail/lists
endif
