Thanks to everybody who replied.
In the end, I did the following: Reconfigured exim on the old server
to work with a smarthost-setup and deliver all the mail to
mail.sun.ac.za of which it was previously a member.
It successfully delivered all the email except for 3 messages which
was rejected because it contained malware.
