[exim] closed connection in response to EHLO

I get this error:

A telnet to 205.161.180.250 25 and typing both "ehlo g2.atypon.com" or
"ehlo g2i.atypon.com" have the same result, i.e. "Connection closed by
foreign hos"t. Typing helo gets this response:

220 205.161.180.250.electrochem.org ESMTP Howdy and welcome to Electrochem
helo
250 205.161.180.250.electrochem.org talking to g2i.atypon.com
([66.252.131.146])

I would think that if a server reports itself as "esmtp" it should
understand an ehlo, or am I wrong? Is the remote server at fault? What
should I tell their admin?
