Summary: Exim fails to deliver message to remote smtp host.
Product: Exim
Version: 4.68
Platform: x86
OS/Version: FreeBSD
Status: NEW
Severity: bug
Priority: high
Component: Transports
AssignedTo: nigel@???
ReportedBy: danny@???
CC: exim-dev@???
This happens to me about once every 6 months.
After sending an email message I get a NDR (or rather a delayed message)
sometime later noting that the message could not be delivered.
The message in the msglog is (email address and server details changed:
2008-01-21 09:51:47 someone@??? R=dnslookup T=remote_smtp defer
(60): Operation timed out: SMTP timeout while connected to
mx.emailaddress.domain [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] after end of data (1864 bytes written)
Based on my experience in the past if I modify the text of the message in any
way then the next retry will succeed.
It leads me to believe that every now and then I am able to create a message
that somehow causes one of exim's functions to fail.
If I take a text copy of the entire message and send it to the remote SMTP
server manually (i.e. with a simple telnet session to port 25) then the message
is delivered OK.
If required I can provide an example of the failed message but I would rather
send it to the person involved directly and not upload it to bugzilla.
I can also provide a TCP dump of the whole session with the remote host.
