What I understood about the callouts is, that it's completly other code
then the normal SMTP transport. (This results in ignoring TLS settings and
some other features.)

Whould be good if we (who is we? ;-) could start some effort to make the
callouts using exactly the same code as the regular SMTP transports.

Unfortunely I do not remember if there was a reason to have other code.
