smtp_return_error_details has to be set (in the main section).

Hmm ... It would not be unreasonable to treat explicit error messages
differently from built-in ones (like the example in the specification) w.r.t.
smtp_return_error_details. There was some change made in this area recently,
the details of which I don't remember right now, but you're already running
the latest version anyway.
