Well, it's clear enough once you already know it, but it's otherwise
not so clear that one doesn't feel the need to experiment to make sure
:-). It's one of the documentation spots I visited over the last few
days, and I didn't find it to be explicit. It wouldn't hurt to have a
mention right in that spot that clarifies it for those unsure:

"When a sender address is being verified, the routers see it as
$local_part and $domain rather than $sender_address, etc."
