No, but that's not a fair comparison. That is a search for a *complete
newline sequence*. The equivalent is searching for \r\n, at least in
<CRLF> mode, not for just \n. I admit it does get weird in these "any"
modes. They have turned out to be a mare's nest/can of worms/quicksand/
that I rather wish I hadn't ventured into.
I'm thinking about your other points.
