Thanks, Phil. Yes, I checked that, too; here it is:

I only had auth_advertise_hosts set for the one machine that user2 used (the
one who got through). I added user1, and am waiting for him to check. I
figured this out by running exim4 with the d+all option, then cut and pasted
the output from a run by user1 & a run by user2 and found the first place
they diverged, which was when exim4 didn't offer the AUTH to user1. That
d+all is pretty nifty!

There's no way to advertise AUTH, is there, besides on a per host basis? I
mean, of course, besides *?
