Ok, I got the value of smtp_active_hostname wrong as that lookup returns
an ip instead of the domain, but you get the idea.

Maybe:

smtp_active_hostname = ${if
eq{$sender_address_domain}{}{$primary_hostname}{$sender_address_domain}}

Or similar?
