AFAIK I've seen those lines too, but -fPIC wasn't applied to all files,
our patch adds -fPIC -DPIC to libpcre_la_CFLAGS, libpcrepsoxi_la_CFLAGS
and libpcrecpp_la_CXXFLAGS
