You seem to have missed the part about configuring his MUA to leave pop3
messages on the server. I have users that travel a lot and in their cases
their MUAs are configured for pop3 (so the mail is on their laptop) but it's
configured to remove messages when they are deleted, or not at all. While
traveling they can still access new mails from remote (web mail) and in
offices other than their main office mail is accessed via imap so it's still
there when they use the pop3 MUA on their main, laptop, email once home.
They had to be taught how to maintain their mailboxes but they too needed to
reference emails from places where internet access isn't always available in
a convenient fashion. And of course their mailboxes are backed up each night
with the rest of the servers.
