I can tell you even in the latest 7.x releases of the PIX/ASA software from
Cisco, most people keep the layer 5 inspection rule for SMTP disabled.
Supposedly the bug was fixed in or around the 5.2.4 release, but I can
report that it still happens even in the 6.x releases. General rule of
thumb with any Cisco engineer I know is disable all layer 5 inspections for
SMTP.

Very interesting...I can't say I completely trust the abilities of the
people who run the network that my machine is on, but the price was
right so I just deal with them the best I can...right now im just
collecting data and comments like this & hopefully I'll be able to give
them a little kick...
