[exim] format error in spool file

I have installed exim 6.47 and Mailscanner 4.59 and now i seem to be getting
the error "format error in spool" for a number of messages awaiting delivery
by exim. and of course these mails do not seem to be delivered.

what is causing this problem? how is is it solved?
