I agree we shouldn't gratuitously make the windows and unix versions
differ. If people want this functionality and it is easy to provide, I
won't object much...

... On the other hand, I always intended them to be separate, as they
are on unix. It seems more logical to me that way. (After all, we don't
include the base C library in every other library.) And it will be less
confusing from a support point of view to have just one style of
library. I have, in fact, already updated (but not yet committed) the
docs (for whenever we get to 7.2) to say what you say above (and which
Sheri pointed out to me after the 7.1 release).
I haven't yet had any feedback on 7.1 other than from Sheri, so I can't
judge whether any other users of PCRE have noticed this issue.
It's now a week since I release 7.1. Either nobody has looked at it, or
it is working for them. Either way, I think I can now start looking at
some of the other things that need doing (as time permits, of course).
