Have you checked your spamassasin installation by running spamc reading
from a test mail message? That would show you whether spamd was working
correctly, and give you an idea of how long it takes to scan the test
message if it is working.
e.g.
# spamc < test_email_message
If you have problems with spamc/spamd it's much easier to test them
outside of Exim.
The best solution would probably be to restore spamassassin on your
production server to a known working state. Then test the new version of
spamassassin elsewhere.
