Maybe to provide at least some level of privacy in case there are
sniffers inbetween (such as various three-lettered agencies...) At least
that is why "I" do TLS on all connections if it is supported. The extra
load is negligable if you have a modest level of traffic and reasonably
modern server(s). If your server can't handle the extra load of TLS,
it's probably way under-powered (it's nothing like the load of
Spamassassin or ClamAV put on your system.)
