Is your saslauthd actually running?

I'm using this authenticator:

sasl_plain:
driver = cyrus_sasl
public_name = PLAIN
server_set_id = $1

In addition:
$ cat /usr/lib/sasl2/exim.conf
pwcheck_method:saslauthd
log_level:9
