Ah, that's just what I needed. Thanks!
./configure CFLAGS='-DBIND_8_COMPAT -g -O2'
make all
seems to do the job nicely. And, adding:
configure.args-append CFLAGS='-DBIND_8_COMPAT -g -O2'
to my MacPorts Portfile makes it build properly!
