Where did you add it? It needs to be put in the first section (near the
top), before the first "end" marker.
You can also check logs in /var/log/exim/. The mainlog or paniclog files
should contain an error message.

It would also be good if you examined Exim documentation better before any
such major changes, because you really need to have more than just a cursory
understanding of the program before trying to fiddle with it.
Getting a qualified consultant to help might not be a bad idea, either.
