Try adjusting the following in your Exim configure:

deliver_queue_load_max = 3.0
queue_only_load = 3.0
queue_run_max = 1
smtp_accept_max = 33

I take in several thousand a day and these settings keep my system stable.

I've got a 1.7Ghz CPU and 2Gig of ram.

This will also keep antispam/antivirus programs from hogging your system.

In Memory of Private First Class James Edward Thomas

Let us not forget Private First Class James Edward Thomas, casualty of
the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, PFC Thomas served
our country until October 3rd, 1965 in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He
was 19 years old and was not married. James died from small arms
fire/grenade. His body was recovered. James was born on March 16th,
1946 in Fort Worth, Texas.

PFC Thomas is on panel 02E, line 105 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in
Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
