Hi Randy,
Hyphens are prefectly legal. hawaiiantel.net seems to exist.
exim -bv user-name@???
on my host verifies just fine -- so ... there must be something in your
Exim config that is doing something different. Try
exim -d -bv user-name@???
and see what the debug output says.
