No, unfortunately you haven't missed anything. Callouts are done by a
separate, simpler routine, which uses some transport settings but not the
actual transport. Normally you shouldn't need authentication for callouts,
because the callouts go to the MXes of the domains in question, and they
should accept mail for their domains without authentication. In case you're
performing call-forwards to internal servers, those should usually accept
mail based on IP address.
