Keep in mind that the MTU problem can be one-way. Just because you
can get a larger packet out to their network doesn't mean the reverse
is true.
I'm not saying that this is definitely an MTU problem, but sending your
ISP a large message doesn't rule out an MTU problem causing your
incoming timeout problems.
In the overall scheme of things, it is much more likely to be an MTU
problem than some unusual TCP or IP layer timeout problem that is
specific somehow to just these two mail servers.
