forgot to mention am using dovecot as IMAP server ... but haven't
thought the problem lies
with dovecot because the following authenticator works fine (whereas
the filelookup
authenticator as shown quoted below fails):

fixed_login:
     driver = plaintext
     public_name = LOGIN
     server_prompts = User Name : Password
     server_condition = \
       ${if and {{eq{$1}{rob}}{eq{$2}{password}}}{yes}{no}}
     server_set_id = $1
