Subject: [exim] how to restart exim
Hi,

exim has suddenly starting giving me this error:

failed to open database lock file /var/spool/exim/db/retry.lockfile:
Permission denied (euid=1002 egid=100)

the file's user and group is: mail.mail. I've looked at the running
processes, some are running as user mail and some are running as root.
BUT the first three that appear in the process list look like this:

exim 1720 0.0 4.3 61624 44240 ? Ss Jul17 4:17
/usr/local/sbin/clamd
exim 1723 0.0 0.0 3752 916 ? Ss Jul17 5:40
/usr/exim/bin/exim -bd
exim 1743 0.0 4.3 61624 44240 ? S Jul17 0:41
/usr/local/sbin/clamd

running as user 'exim'.

No mail is now getting out, or if it is it is getting out extremely
slowly! And I think I might have made things worse by trying to restart
exim with:

/etc/init.d/exim restart

which produced the error:

Restarting MTA: No /usr/lib/exim/exim3 found running; none killed.

And this has produced extra processes (which is probably making things
worse now?!) like this:

mail 18537 0.0 0.0 2272 872 ? Ss 05:38 0:00 /bin/sh
-c if [ -x /usr/lib/exim/exim3 -a -f /etc/exim/exim.
conf ]; then /usr/lib/exim/exim3 -q ; fi

I really don't know what to do now! I have hundreds of exim processes
running. How do I shut them all down adn restart? I'm on debian linux.

thanks,

- Kev
