It's a bad idea to assume the use of GNU grep :-
% ls -l /bin/[ef]grep
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root bin 26K Jan 23 2005 /bin/egrep
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root bin 18K Dec 16 2005 /bin/fgrep
Particularly if GNU grep optimises your grep for you anyway ... so
there's no penalty for using the 'right' grep.
