Well, the original receipt mechanism was in the receiving MTA. As I recall,
Philip elected not to implement it as it was already widely recognized as
worse than useless when he started Exim.

"I the MTA did something with your message."

The more modern replacement is an MUA thing, and is not quite as useless.

"Some entity (programmatic, wrong human, or right human) may have seen your
message, or not. But something or someone may at least have had an
opportunity to see it."
