On a mail server(Debian Woody with exim4.34-9.backports,exiscan and
spamassassin-3.0.2-0.backports) that has run a long time now and that
was very stable a strange problem developed over the weekend and I am at
a loss on how to correct the problem:
It seems that the communication between exim and spamd broke down. In
/var/log/mail.info I see entries like this:
Jul 31 08:51:32 mail3 spamd[26188]: bad protocol: header error: (closed
before headers)
Jul 31 08:54:32 mail3 spamd[26189]: connection from localhost
[127.0.0.1] at port 52808
Jul 31 08:54:32 mail3 spamd[26189]: bad protocol: header error: (closed
before headers)
Jul 31 08:55:02 mail3 spamd[26190]: Use of uninitialized value in
subroutine entry at /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1/Socket.pm line 156.
Jul 31 08:55:02 mail3 spamd[26190]: error: Bad arg length for
Socket::unpack_sockaddr_in, length is
0, should be 16 at /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1/Socket.pm line 156._ , continuing
Jul 31 08:57:32 mail3 spamd[26191]: connection from localhost
[127.0.0.1] at port 53124
Jul 31 08:57:32 mail3 spamd[26191]: bad protocol: header error: (closed
before headers)
Jul 31 09:00:32 mail3 spamd[26192]: connection from localhost
[127.0.0.1] at port 53448
Jul 31 09:00:32 mail3 spamd[26192]: bad protocol: header error: (closed
before headers)
And no email has been scanned by spamassassin since Saturday.
I have stopped and restarted both spamassassin and exim4 thinking that
some memory content may have been corrupted but it did not make a
difference.
In a google-search I have seen some emails on referring to what may be
related problems referring to some bug in exim and/or spamassassin.
What boggles me is that this was the first problem of this kind I have
seen and I have been working with three of these servers for five years
now.
I would really appreciate some help on this one.
Regards
Johann
