Softupdates are not a 'gotcha' in that circumstance, but an advantage.
We have been using ufs+softupdates since it was introduced - usually with SCSI
hardware RAID, atacontrol IDE raid (4.x), or gmirror (6.1), and have experienced
only positive results, *especially* w/r protecting us against data corruption
from unplanned power outages.
But you should research that on the freebsd.org site, not here.

BTW - 'ufs' is simply the latest incarnation of what was originally called 'ffs'
