I believe it's probably best if you scanned for virus and spam on smtp1
only. If performance is a concern (5k users? it probably is) you can
"outsource" the scanning to the smtp2 server, but still reject messages
from smtp1.

What antivirus and spam scanning tool are you using? Some of them have
options where you tell the daemons to listen on a given port and then
smtp1 can connect to those ports to perform the checks.

spamd_address and av_scanner is probably what you need (and RTM of your
av and anti-spam)
