Assunto: [exim] How can I get Exim to register itself on a mailhost?
To use Exim as a mail sending system, I need to make Exim register
itself at a mailhost for outgoing email, the mailhost is accepting plain
SMTP messages without any problems, as long as the user register at the
host.

The problem is sending email, I am fetching email by fetchmail.

When inserting target.mail.server.example (smtp.domeneshop.no) in
/etc/exim4/passwd.client, this is the result:

2006-05-21 10:23:37 1FhhiE-0001eM-RR plain authenticator failed
H=lakepoint.domeneshop.no [xx.xx.xx.xx] 535 5.7.0 authentication failed

When inserting target.mailserver.example:login:password in
/etc/eximt/passwd.client, I get the lines below:

2006-05-20 23:37:22 1FhZ8U-0001pR-Hg <= ketil@???
U=ketil P=local S=519 id=20060520213722.GA7027@???
2006-05-20 23:37:23 1FhZ8U-0001pR-Hg no IP address found for host vestby1
2006-05-20 23:37:23 1FhZ8U-0001pR-Hg == ketil@??? R=smarthost
defer (-1): lookup of host "login" failed in smarthost router

I have tried it at two OSes on my laptop: Debian Stable and Ubuntu, but
the result is the same on both systems: The login name is used as
hostname resulting in the message above.

I have clearly misunderstood something, need some help to get it done.

:-)
