        I would think a 4xx level error message would be more
appropriate for quota issues since it is possibly a temporary
situation which may be resolved in the few days a mailer is
trying to resend a message to that particular recipient.  If you
respond with a 5xx level message, it will result in an immediate
bounce message to the original sender which is not ideal in this
case.


        Of course, this assumes RFC compliant mailers are
involved.  A lot of broken mailers out there will fail
immediately even on a 4xx level message, but that is out of your
control.
