I am unable to find which MTAs use spaces for folding, but I am sure to
have seen it.

Concerning "look ugly": When using a client, it should not make a
difference. Either way, one "Received:" header should be displayed as
one, long line, without CRLFs, and tabs at appearantly random places do
look ugly in single lines of text. But I suspect you talk about looking
at raw SMTP messages, like seen in log files. I have to admit tabs
look better there, but I care more about what clients do (obviously not
wearing my BOFH hat today ;-).
