Just did the same !
Thanks for that. I'll check my ClamAV config file and make sure its not
doing something silly.
I've upgraded the server to V4.54 of Exim, 0.88 of ClamAV and 3.1.0 of
SpamAssassin now, though it made no difference until I rebooted the server,
and then it all seemed to work fine.
However I did notice that the memory usage slowly went down to only 8MB free
with some swap space being used (The server has 512MB), so I have a feeling
I'm going to get the same problem at some point.
So, two questions really. Could this be a memory leak ? or is it quite
simply a case, that the server just doesn't have enough physical memory to
run Exim, SpamAssassin and ClamAV ?
We only have 20 users, but email traffic is substantial (we're a PR and
webhosting company, so lots of powerpoint presentations etc being emailed to
clients etc).
As an aside - Our client mail server has 1.5GB of memory and only has 20MB
free, but isn't swapping, so I've probably answered my own question

Hello
I dunno if the reason is the same, but I've had some odd behaviour with
clamav and certain emails with attach.
Clamav will freeze up while scanning certain message (not too big, since I
don't scan mails over 2MB) and exim becomes so slow after that (clamav hogs
the CPU) that connections take forever (in some cases causing smtp
timeouts).
I have clamav set to not descend more than 1 level into zip files. rars are
not scanned.
This only happens on Solaris and FreeBSD, not on Linux, for some reason.
This is also not very easy to reproduce, since most attach (no matter what
size) go thru without problem.
Usually the solution is to kill the clamava process and restart it. I'm
using the standard exiscan mechanism to communicate with clamav and
spamassassin. Maybe I'll give sophie a try.
