Thank you for the link. However, I'm doing tech support for a server hosting
company and developing a body of knowledge to provide better tech support. The
server in question is neither under my control nor am I the official
administrator on the account. Despite the FAQ, ANY release of client
information is considered an offense worthy of termination.

I do understand that sometimes the domain and IP addresses contain
troubleshooting clues, and I understand that obfuscation can be annoying to
those who are willing to help. In this case, after thoroughly verifying all DNS
issues and routing issues that could affect mail delivery, I need a thorough,
generic command-line testing procedure to analyze the effects step-by-step.

The link to swaks is good. It provided me with a tool to decompose and another
tool (gen-auth) to use in certain limited circumstances. Of course, what I was
really looking for was a method of interactively communicating with exim from
telnet, while using tail, ptrace, strace or whatever other tool in another
terminal window. Although I've telnetted to port 25 thousands of times on
thousands of servers, I've seldom run across a session that didn't let me send
mail outside the domain after authenticating with POP3.

With the other MTA's I test, I can emulate the account I'm mailing from and see
the results in gory detail. I haven't found a way to do that yet using exim, so
I thought I'd ask here since this group seems well-informed.

And my third question stems from the need for more detail in the log files.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mike Burke
