[exim] best practices for set up and authentication

I am looking for a list of best practices and set up recommendations for my
email server. We currently have exim 3.35-1woody3 running with ipopd
authenticating with our Windows domain controller via Kerberos. The email
server and domain controller are located at 2 different sites, so if they
lose contact, we can not send or receive email.

any suggestions would be helpful.
