Let me use an example to illustrate what I met.
my username and passwd are user1 and 1234:
I've tried the following configurations
fixed_login:
        driver = plaintext
        public_name = LOGIN
============================
        client_send =: user1 : 1234\:
        client_send =: user1 : 1234\\:
        client_send =: user1 : 1234\\\\:
        client_send =": user1 : 1234\:"
        client_send =": user1 : 1234\\:"
        client_send =": user1 : 1234\\\:"
        client_send =": user1 : 1234\\\\:"
        client_send =: user1 : "1234\:"
        client_send =: user1 : "1234\\:"
        client_send =: user1 : "1234\\\:"
        client_send =: user1 : "1234\\\\:"
all failed when authenticating.
