Thunderbird can easily authenticate themself via CRAM-MD5/DIGEST-MD5
methods (a little better than simple PLAIN).
OE5/OE6 can understand LOGIN (but only in TLS session) and SPA/NTLM.
Just replace:
public_name = PLAIN
with:
public_name = LOGIN
