The best way to install exim on FreeBSD is to use the ports system.
Basically with an up to date ports tree, run:
cd /usr/ports/mail/exim
make install clean
Check out the Makefile for the options that you can compile exim with.
I use exim-mysql for mysql integration, but you can do this with options
on exim.
