I'm not sure what your problem is because you message is very short on
details: you have not included your configuration file, or any debugging
output, and you have not indicated exactly what you expected to hapeen or
exactly what did happen.
The "interface" option is about the source IP address of outgoing
connections, and does not affect the destination of messages (which is
determined by the "hosts" option).
Your talk about first and second smart hosts appears to be something to do
with routing problems, not outgoing interface options.
